H.O.M.E. Program

Home Ownership for Mothers in Erie

To truly combat housing instability and help women build knowledge and wealth for their children, Erie City Moms is committed to bolstering any Mother figure who aspires to homeownership. In the fall of 2023, we purchased and began renovating what we hope will be our first homeowner pipeline property. There, Mother figures and their families can live short-term for low rent and continue to build their credit and savings accounts while being mentored through financial literacy and common challenges to homeownership. Tenants will receive help in their permanent housing search and access to all first-time homebuyer benefits.

Mentoring and Advocacy

Connected resources, long-term support

The Good Friend Program, our one-on-one and group mentoring initiative, focuses on braving maternal wellbeing, increasing social capital, gaining financial literacy, building soft and occupational skills, and improving parenting know-how.

Mentees have accomplished milestones from balancing a budget to buying a home. All the while, mentors help carry burdens and open doors, share wisdom and encouragement, and celebrate Moms’ successes with their families.

Basic Needs Support

Home and help in difficult seasons

Today, 45.2% of Erie’s single Mothers and their children and another 8.4% of married Moms and their kids are living in poverty. Black single Mothers and their children make up the highest percentage of Erie’s homeless population. Our Moms groups are a channel for our leaders to connect with Mother figures who want to help with meeting basic needs or navigating local systems.

Support may also come from Erie City Moms’ Housing Team committed to helping Moms tackle safety and quaility-of-life housing issues.

Through our Moms groups and Mentoring, we help Moms overcome hurdles like job insecurity, child care uncertainty, and housing instability, all as a result of being part of a loving, accountable, well-networked community. We’re witness to successes big and small and expect many more stories of transformation.
